Laser Teeth Whitening:

The dentist will first prepare your mouth by cleaning your teeth to remove stubborn stains. You will be given protective goggles to wear over your eyes to shield them from the laser beam and the dentist will protect the soft tissues in your mouth from the bleaching gel by placing a rubber dam around the teeth.

The dentist will then apply the whitening gel to your teeth. The laser is then used to activate the bleaching agents in the gel and the gel is left on the teeth for the recommended time, depending on what system the dentist is using. This is where the procedure may differ. For instance:

? Some systems require 3 x 15-minute applications of the gel

? Other systems require just one application for 45 minutes

Once the allotted time has elapsed, all the gel is removed and the dentist cleans the teeth again to ensure all traces of the gel have gone, which completes the treatment.

At-Home Whitening Kits:

This treatment will entail two appointments with the dentist. At the first visit, the dentist will need to take impressions of your mouth to send to the laboratory that manufactures custom-made trays that fit over your teeth. These trays are typically worn overnight and where the bleaching gel is placed.

You can return to the dentist after a few days when the dental clinic has received the trays from the lab. The dentist will ensure they fit, demonstrate how they should be used and give you a supply of bleaching gel that you will place inside the tray and wear overnight for around two weeks.

Are Teeth Whitening Treatments Suitable for Dental Tourists?

Teeth whitening treatments are great treatments for dental tourists as they can make a big difference to your smile, with the minimum of effort. For laser teeth whitening, the treatment takes less than two hours, the results are immediately noticeable and the treatment can whiten teeth by up to 14 shades.

Dentists also offer take-home whitening kits. Although the effect from these kits are not as dramatic as laser teeth whitening, the bleaching gel is stronger than over-the-counter and will provide a good result. The beauty of the at-home kits is that the degree of whitening is more subtle and you can control the treatment. One course is usually two weeks’ supply, but you can stop at any time before that if you’re happy with the effect.

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Teeth Whitening?

It is important to consider the safety aspects of teeth whitening procedures. The treatment may be a cosmetic procedure, but you can overdo things if you don’t adhere to the safety tips, which may cause permanent damage to your gums and/or teeth.

Thus, your oral health needs to be in tip-top condition with no signs of active gum disease or tooth decay to maximise the results from any teeth whitening procedure. Your dentist will assess the status of your teeth and gums, and while any signs of decay are easily remedied with dental fillings, gum disease is a longer-term issue which may take some weeks or months to get under control.

Teeth discoloured from antibiotics will be unaffected by teeth whitening treatments. This is because antibiotic staining affects the inside of the tooth rather than the outside, and teeth whitening only removes external stains.
