Dental crowns, sometimes referred to as ‘caps’, are made from hard-wearing material and fit over teeth to add strength to damaged or weakened teeth.
They can also offer a good cosmetic result for misshapen, chipped, cracked or ugly teeth, and can be used to replace missing teeth as part of a dental implant or a dental bridge .
There are a number of different materials available for dental crowns but most people opt for porcelain or composite crowns, which can be colour-matched to your other teeth. To some extent, the choice of material may be dictated by where the tooth is in the mouth and the biting and chewing forces it is subjected to.
Your dentist will discuss with you the options available and their suitability to your situation. The materials available for your crown include:
? Metal — This is generally the cheapest option and is very hard-wearing. However, you can opt for a precious metal, such as gold, which is not a cheap option—although most people are not necessarily drawn to the aesthetic result metal gives.
? Porcelain-Fused-to-Metal (PFM) — This crown has a metal base, but is covered in porcelain to match your existing teeth. Generally hard-wearing, the porcelain is prone to chipping, which may expose the metal beneath.
? Porcelain — Reasonably hard-wearing and one of the most expensive options, but prone to wearing down.
? Zirconia — The most expensive option, but also very hard-wearing and natural-looking.

The procedure for dental crowns typically takes two or three days. At your initial appointment with your dentist in Tunis, your tooth will be cleaned and shaped so that your new crown will fit snugly on top. Impressions will also be taken of your mouth to send to the laboratory where your crown is tailor-made to fit. The dentist will then fit a temporary crown until your new crown is available for fitting a day or two later.
On your next visit, the dentist will remove the temporary crown and place the permanent crown on top of your tooth to check the fit and colour, making any minor adjustment before affixing the crown permanently with a light-activated adhesive that bonds the crown securely in place.
CAD/CAM Same-Day Dentistry
Many modern dental clinics in Tunis offer computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture (CAD/CAM) dentistry which allows your dentist to make design, manufacture and fit your new crown—sometimes all in one day. This essentially means that the above two steps can be combined into just one, albeit slightly longer session at the dentist’s office.
