A rubber dam is placed around your teeth to protect the gums and tongue from the bleaching gel. You will be given goggles to protect your eyes from the laser beam.

Gel is then applied to the teeth and the laser is directed to the gel to activate the bleaching agents in the gel. Depending on the system your dentist uses, the gel and laser may be applied just once, or the gel may be applied three times in 15-minute intervals.

For the at-home whitening kit you will need to make two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, impressions are made of your teeth. These will be sent to a lab where trays custom trays are made to fit over your teeth where you will place the bleaching gel.

When your dentist receives the trays from the lab you can go and pick them up, as well as the gel. The dentist will show you how to use them, and once you run out of gel you can purchase additional supplies from your dentist at home.
