Are Dental Veneers for Me?

It’s important to remember that dental veneers are purely a cosmetic treatment, having no bearing on fixing any dental health problems. It’s also important that you fully look into the veneers treatment and what it entails so you can decide whether it is for you, and your expectations of the treatment.

You must have good oral and dental health beforehand. It’s no good wallpapering over a crumbling wall that needs plastering, and the same goes for veneers. If the underlying tooth is not stable, then your veneers won’t last. Also, dental health problems, such as tooth decay, aren’t going anywhere just because you have a veneer fitted. In fact, it will only get worse, compromising your tooth—and the veneer.

The harsh takeaway from this is simple: make sure your dental health is in order before you even consider dental veneers.

The dental veneers procedure typically takes two visits to the dentist. During the first visit, the dentist will examine your mouth thoroughly and go through your medical and dental history. If you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding), this may be a problem as the constant back and forth motion of your grinding teeth could weaken the veneers, causing them to break or fall off.

If you are deemed suitable for the procedure, the treatment can be broken down as follows:

1. Treatment Planning and Tooth Preparation: You will discover a choice of materials for your veneers —some more expensive than others—which the dentist will talk you through. Once you have decided on the material, your teeth will be prepared to receive the veneers. This involves removing a sliver of enamel from the front of your teeth, which essentially creates a space for the veneer to be placed so that it is flush with the rest of your teeth. After the teeth have been prepared, the dentist will take impressions of your mouth to send to the laboratory where your veneers are custom-made to fit.
2. Affixing Veneers: After a few days, your dentist will receive your veneers back from the laboratory and you can go back to the dentist to have them fitted. After placing the veneers to ensure they fit, the teeth will be etched slightly, providing a rough surface to enable a stronger bond. A light-activated adhesive is applied, the veneers placed and, once the light has activated the adhesive, the veneers should be fixed firmly to your teeth.

CAD/CAM

CAD/CAM uses the newest digital technology to create a mockup of your mouth on a computer screen. Your veneers are designed on the screen in front of you, and the dentist or technician is able to adjust the size, colour and shape so you can see exactly how they look. 

Once you are happy, the images are sent to an on-site laboratory where a computer-controlled milling machine makes the veneers to the exact specifications. Once complete, the dentist attaches them to your teeth and you are then free to walk out flashing that new, dazzling smile.
