The Ultimate Guide to Dentists in Guanajuato

Introduction

Come to the heartland of Mexico and visit our dentists in Guanajuato for low-cost dental care. The classically elegant capital city is a feast for the senses, as well as providing first-class dentistry and all the facilities and amenities you need to enjoy a trip here – for a fraction of the price you’d pay at home.
The State is historically significant with its towns playing important roles on the road to Mexican Independence, especially the capital city of Guanajuato, and the nearby towns of Dolores Hidalgo and San Miguel de Allende – which are the most visited destinations in the state. Guanajuato and San Miguel de Allende are UNESCO World Heritage Sites and certainly worth visiting purely for that reason, but many travelers also like to follow in the footsteps of Miguel Hidalgo’s insurgent army and visit other towns along the route.

Surrounded by the Sierra de Guanajuato mountains, the capital is in a picturesque valley. Narrow cobblestone streets, shady plazas, sidewalk cafes and grand neoclassical style colonial architecture give Guanajuato a distinctly European feel, and with its museums, markets, theatres and historic monuments there is a relaxed, low-key feel about it and certainly no shortage of things to see and do.

Just outside of the capital is the region known as the Bajio, where you can find Cubilete Hill, the highest mountain in the state, and thought to be the exact geographic center of Mexico.

The 20m (65 feet) tall Cristo Rey (Christ the King) statue on the summit of Cubilete Hill can be seen for miles around, and is on the site of a museum. From the top are amazing panoramic views across the countryside, if you have the energy to get up there.

Guanajuato City is often described by visitors as one of Mexico’s most beautiful and colorful cities. Certainly the baroque architecture is impressive, but so too is the riot of color produced by Guanajuato’s houses that seem to tumble down the hills.

Certainly a good base to start from if you are intending to explore the rest of the state, the state capital still offers visitors plenty of options if you decide to stay in the vicinity. Dental patients will find the facilities here second-to-none and savings on their dental care more than enough compensation for making the trip.

Where is Guanajuato?

Located in the center of Mexico, south-east of Mexico City, it is bordered by the states of Zacatecas in the north-west, San Luis Potosi in the north-east, Michoacan to the east, Queretaro to the south and Jalisco to the west.

Why visit a dentist in Guanajuato?

A real flavor of Colonial Mexico in a safe state with friendly locals, inspiring history and a wealth of things to do – what’s not to like?

Most foreign tourists tend to flock to San Miguel de Allende – and it is certainly easy to see why, but they are missing a trick by not visiting some of the Guanajuato’s lesser known towns – and especially the state capital, which is charming in itself.

One thing is for sure, wherever you decide to have your dental treatment in Guanajuato, you are certain of a warm welcome, expertise and a high standard of care which ought to belie the low prices.

Where to stay?

A fantastic array of accommodation options awaits in Guanajuato – from boutique hotels in old Colonial houses to ultra-modern and, of course, prices are very reasonable.

Is it safe?

Yes. There are no US advisory warnings against travel to the whole state of Guanajuato.

Is the quality of care the same as back home?

Most definitely – but we would say that you have to do a little bit of research to make sure you visit a quality-checked dentist.

Good and bad dentists exist everywhere in the world – even in your home town – but the difference in going to a dentist in your home town and a dentist abroad is that you are able to ask friends, relations and neighbors about a local dentist.

This is where Dental Departures steps in, becoming your eyes and ears. Our online reviews from real patients, clinic photos, virtual tours and the fact that we personally visit our verified dental clinics ensures you get as much information as you can, without actually going.

What happens if something goes wrong? Does my dental care have guarantees or warranties?

All of our dentists provide guarantees or warranties on both their work, and the materials they use to carry out their work, and these vary in length dependent upon the procedure you have done.

While no medical or dental procedure can ever be guaranteed 100%, it is a very rare occurrence for something to go wrong for any of our patients. If they do, we like to think that our commitment to customer service ensures that we will get any problem resolved as quickly as possible. Dental Departures is your advocate and will take up your issues on your behalf with your dentist.

If you are worried about being out-of-pocket for accommodation and travel expenses if you do need to return to your dentist for additional work that is under warranty or guarantee you can always take out a low-cost insurance plan to cover you for this eventuality.

Do I need to speak Spanish?

.A few words of Spanish will always go down well, if you know them, but generally you will find English is spoken in a lot of places in Guanajuato.

What payment methods are accepted by most dental offices?

Most dental offices in Guanajuato accept US dollars, as well as other forms of payment, including debit and credit cards, traveler and personal checks and bank transfers. Look at each individual clinic listing on our website for further information. Please note that credit card payments may incur an additional 3-4% processing fee.

Is my US or Canadian Dental Insurance accepted?

If your insurance provider allows for ‘out-of-network’ expenses you may be able to claim back the costs of your treatment when you return home. Ask your insurance provider before you book and make sure you get the appropriate paperwork to bring with you for your dentist in Guanajuato to complete.

When is the best time to visit one of our dentists?

Average temperatures are 18.5C (65F), although temperatures can get as hot as 36C (97F) in the south and southeast. The rainy season is between July and August. The pleasant temperatures generally make Guanajuato a good place for visiting, but you will probably need some warm clothing for night-time.

Our dentists are open throughout the year.

Is the region handicapped accessible?

The City of Guanajuato’s streets are winding and narrow with alleyways that cars cannot pass through and stairs going up the mountainsides – so getting about in a wheelchair will be quite difficult. The historic center may be a little easier with its large colonial buildings and frequent small plazas.

The hilly nature of the surrounding countryside means that many of the towns in the State have the same steep, narrow streets.

However, give us a call to discuss your requirements as we can always find a way of getting you to see one of our dentists, with many of them providing free pick-up services from your hotel and/or the airport.

What is the downside? What should I know about visiting?

Dental patients should be aware that sedation dentistry is not offered as standard in Mexico. If you require more than a local anesthetic most of our clinics will arrange this, but it will need to be booked in advance as the services of an anesthesiologist are required. This will cost an additional $400-$600.

Please note that prescription anxiety medication, such as Valium, will also need to be booked in advance.

What else is there in Guanajuato?

Silver was discovered in the City of Guanajuato in the 1600s, creating one of the world’s most important silver mining regions. One of the most productive mines, La Valenciana, on the northern edge of Guanajuato, although closed today is now part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visitors can take part in tours to the mine shaft, guided by retired miners who provide a real insight into what life was like working in the mines.

The silver mines brought wealth and prosperity, which can be seen in the resplendent mansions and churches, such as the Templo de San Cayetano de la Valenciana (San Cayetano Church), that were built at the time.

One of Guanajuato’s most famous tourist attractions are the Mummies of Guanajuato, considered to be the largest collection of mummified remains in the Western Hemisphere.

Throughout the year, the area hosts a number of festivals. The Cervantino Festival usually takes place in October in the City of Guanajuato. It is a performing arts festival in honor of the author of Don Quixote, Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra, and features, among other things, music, dance and theatre from artists from across the world.

A sight to behold is the International Balloon Festival, which takes place in Leon in November. One of the most renowned in the world, it features around 200 hot air balloons from around 15 different countries, and is a colorful and popular spectacle.

You can get breathtaking, bird’s eye views from a hot air balloon ride, or from hang-gliding, and after working up an appetite from your activities, the local Bajio cuisine featuring favorites like enchiladas mineras (tortillas filled with beans, meat, cheese and topped with sauces), is not to be missed.
