The actual treatment is usually carried out in one day, but your dentist will want to wait and see for a few days that there are no signs of infection before the final fillings are put in to seal the canals. If you have had a particularly big tooth filled, you may also have to have a crown, which will take an additional few days. Also, if you have had an infection, your dentist will not perform a root canal until this has cleared up. You can get antibiotics from your dentist at home for this, unless you plan on staying in Ho Chi Minh City for longer than 2 weeks.

At your first appointment (if you don’t have an infection) your dentist will perform the root canal procedure after x-rays have been taken, which will show the extent of the problem and how many root canals there are. Teeth have between 1 and 3 roots, each with 1 or 2 canals, so there may be potentially 6 canals for your dentist to clear of debris. When each one is cleared, they will be cleaned thoroughly and packed with a temporary filling. This filling is left in place for a few days to make sure there is no infection.

When you return to your dentist, if no infection is present, the permanent fillings will be administered and your tooth prepared to receive a crown, if needed. You may have to come back another few days later to have the crown permanently installed.
