The Ultimate Guide to Root Canal in Chiang Mai

Introduction

Last fact-checked: 11 February 2020

Worried about the expense of root canal treatment to save your tooth? Then book an appointment for a root canal in Chiang Mai with Dental Departures—and save enough to pay for flights and accommodation as part of a trip to this charming Northern Thai city.

Root canal treatment is necessary to save a tooth when the soft pulp in the center has become infected. It is normally an expensive procedure, especially in countries like Australia, New Zealand and the UK (if you go private); however, it can be undertaken by a dentist specialising in root canals (an endodontist) in Chiang Mai for almost a thousand (AUD) less.

Chiang Mai’s serenity, alongside its modern tourist facilities and range of attractions, provides a great combination for root canal patients spending time away from home.

Two weeks in Chiang Mai can be made as laid-back or adventure-filled as you like, with the Old City area and surrounding countryside packed full of superb hotels, spas, restaurants, markets, modern malls and historic temples.

Why Have Root Canals in Chiang Mai?

At Dental Departures we work closely with our dentists in Chiang Mai, ensuring they are all quality-checked and have experience and training in their specialist areas. A root canal treatment is a specialist treatment and so it is important to ensure that your dentist has undergone all of the necessary training and, ideally, has a wealth of experience in dealing with international patients.

Dental care in Thailand is generally of an excellent standard as it has become one of the leaders in dental tourism, providing impressive facilities and excellent customer service.

Rising dental care costs and widespread air travel have made it much easier for people to travel further afield for their treatment. This rise in the number of patients travelling from abroad has resulted in increased competition, with clinics here constantly investing in their own facilities to attract the most sought-after dentists.

How Long Do Root Canals Take in Chiang Mai?

A root canal procedure may be carried out in one or two appointments. However, any infections will need to be treated before the root canal procedure begins

For international patients travelling to Chiang Mai, it is advisable to receive a course of antibiotics from your dentist at home before you travel–and you will need to have been on the course for at least 10 days before the root canal treatment is started.

With the infection clear, the first step involves your dentist in Chiang Mai taking x-rays to assess the damage to your tooth, as well as to ensure there is no infection. The treatment then begins by numbing the area around the tooth with a local anaesthetic and a rubber dam placed over the tooth to prevent bacteria and water from getting inside. The root canals will be cleared of any material before ensuing chambers are all thoroughly cleaned and packed with a temporary filling or crown.

When your permanent crown is ready, the temporary filling or crown will be removed and a permanent crown fitted. If your dentist has an in-house lab, your crown can be milled and fitted the same day.

How Much Can I Save on Root Canals in Chiang Mai Compared to Australia?

In Australia, even a straightforward root canal can cost around AUD $1,200 in Australia. In Chiang Mai, you can knock a zero off that figure (plus a little more) with treatment costing around AUD $130.

For multiple root canals, your savings will be enough to enjoy a holiday in Chiang Mai (or a number of other exotic destinations in Thailand) and still have money left over.
