What is the Procedure for Fillings?

The dentist begins the procedure by giving you local anesthesia to numb the area around the tooth. After removing the decay, the cavity will be cleaned before the filling material is applied. Some clinics use air abrasion or laser technology, which is more comfortable for patients, especially those with dental anxiety. Once the filling material has hardened (it only takes a matter of minutes), the dentist will begin to smooth and shape the filling. 

You may be asked to bite down on a piece of colored paper so the dentist can see where the bite marks are on the paper from the new filling in relation to your other teeth. If only the newly-filled tooth is making an impression on the paper, this indicates it will need filing down some more. Once the dentist is happy and the filling feels comfortable, the newly filled tooth will be polished to complete the procedure.
