A dental implant is a titanium post that replaces a missing tooth. It acts as a tooth root and is embedded into the jawbone beneath the gumline where it fuses with the bone to form a strong base onto which your replacement tooth (crown) is attached.

It feels, looks and acts exactly like your own tooth. It doesn’t come loose like a denture, nor will it compromise the health of your surrounding teeth as it doesn’t have to be anchored to them (unlike a dental bridge).

Am I a Suitable Candidate for Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a good option for people who are in good health and do not have bone loss in their jaw. Bone loss is one of the main causes of tooth loss and is normally a result of periodontitis, an advanced form of gum disease that breaks down the bone tissue. If you have lost your tooth in this way, it is not likely that your jawbone will have enough healthy tissue to hold a dental implant.

However, all is not entirely lost in these circumstances and it is possible to have a bone graft —a separate surgical procedure that builds up the jawbone enough so that an implant can be placed. Although this is a common treatment, it may delay your implant procedure for up to a year. If you are looking at replacing a large number of teeth and have bone loss, another option to look at is an All-on-4.

If you are a smoker, dental implants are not suitable. This is because smoking affects the body’s ability to fight infection, which is particularly important after the implant has been placed when sufficient nutrients and oxygen are required at the cell level to promote healing. Smoking also diminishes blood flow, which will cause ongoing problems for the tissue health around the implant, which could lead to the implant failing and ultimately having to have it removed.

Note: Each trip may take around a week—but your dentist will give you a more concrete timeline as to how long you will need to stay in (or close to) the city. The dental implant treatment steps:

During the first trip, the dental implant is placed in the jawbone. The procedure is carried out either under a local anaesthetic, or with conscious sedation. The dentist will make a small incision in the gum where the implant is to be placed. A small flap is made in the gum so the dentist can access the jawbone, and a small hole is made in it. The implant is placed in the hole and the gum flap is stitched back in place, concealing the implant.

The implant will need to fuse with the bone in a process called osseointegration. Your dentist will let you know when you will need to return to have your new tooth (crown) attached to the implant, but, typically, it should be around three months.

On your next trip, the dentist will numb the gum around the implant with a local anaesthetic. The gum is opened up to expose the implant and your new tooth (crown) is attached to the implant to complete the procedure.
