Island-hopping in the Philippines is a popular holiday pursuit for Aussies and Kiwis, and stopping off in Manila for affordable dental crown work is something savvy patients are cottoning on to.

First and foremost, Manila is home to first-rate dental clinics and facilities, making it worthwhile to spend at least a few days having dental treatment here during your trip to the Philippines. The sprawling city provides modern urban amenities, superb accommodation and dining options and, of course, that notorious traffic.

The different districts across Manila offer a fascinating glimpse of life in this enormous city (some of which are less hectic than others), although most live up to their reputation as being busy, crowded and noisy – but never dull!

Amble around Chinatown’s shopping thoroughfares; it’s often very crowded but is a colorful, lively place to visit. Or if enormous shopping malls are more your thing, you’ll find plenty throughout the city, including the Megamall in Mandaluyong. 

The tourist districts around Ermita and Malate have lots of small bars and restaurants to recharge and soak up the fun and friendly atmosphere, or you can always watch the world go by at the ever-entertaining Rizal Park.

Manila is great to visit in its own right, but it is also a base for getting to other areas around the Philippines. While you are waiting for the lab work on your dental crowns, you can take a flight to the Palawan Province and witness some of the biodiversity that makes the Philippines such a special country.

Dental crowns are a relatively simple procedure for your dentist to carry out in Manilla. However, the lab work is rather labor-intensive which makes them expensive, which is a growing concern for many people in developed countries (like Australia, New Zealand and the US) where prices are rising faster than ever.

In Manila, the process for receiving dental crowns is the same as at home – bar one major difference: the price. The cost of living is so much cheaper here, which means that everything associated with your dental treatment will be considerably cheaper: lower wages, office rents and materials are all passed on to you as savings on your dental work.

This is the real reason why dental crowns are much more affordable in Manila, not because they are of inferior quality. In fact, at the best clinics, you will find every aspect of your treatment to be comparable to what you would receive at home. This goes for everything from the quality of care provided, qualifications of your dentist to the modern, high-tech equipment  used in the clinics.

Dental crowns are usually completed in a couple of days by the lab, and you will need two appointments with your dentist at the start and end of your trip.

At your first appointment, your tooth will be prepared to receive the crown by filing it down. After that, you will have impressions made which will be sent to the lab so they can custom-make the crown.

When the crown is ready, head back for a second appointment with your dentist in Manilla to have it fitted. The dentist will check that it fits properly, and, provided it does, will then cement it firmly in place. The entire process can be achieved in two days to a week, depending upon your needs and the condition of your mouth.

As crowns can be made from a variety of different materials, prices for this treatment can vary quite considerably (depending on your choice). Your dentist will discuss the merits of each material with you on your first appointment, but ultimately the decision will be yours.

If cost is your main concern, then porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) is probably your best option. However, if cost is less of a problem, then you may prefer to have zirconia, which is the most natural-looking and hard-wearing material available.
